Discover Zwota: Hiking, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Zwota
Zwota combines varied hiking experiences with regional culture and unusual insights into the history of the village. For planning your trip, you can choose between longer circular trails, nature information, museums and special events. A holiday apartment in Zwota is a suitable starting point if you would like to organise your stay around these different interests.
Hiking Trails between the Zwota Valley and the Höhensteig
There are well-signposted hiking trails in and around Zwota. Well-known routes include the certified Klingenthal-Zwota circular hiking trail, the Höhensteig and the Vogtland Panorama Trail. The selection is complemented by six local routes: "Around the Zwota Valley", "Hoher Brand" in the Elster Mountains, "Sankt-Peters-Brunnen near Kottenheide", "Raubschloss in the Klausenbach Valley", "Source of the Zwota" and "Glasbach Valley and Herrenberg". The local routes are approximately between 9.2 and 13.5 km long. Route 6, "Glasbach Valley and Herrenberg", covers 9.2 km. The different trail lengths provide guidance when planning your hiking days.
The Hüttenbachtal nature trail complements the routes with an informative nature experience. It runs at elevations between 600 and 800 m above sea level and explains flora, fauna, history and geology on 21 information boards. The 43.44-hectare "Hüttenbach" nature reserve is also part of the Erzgebirge-Vogtland Nature Park. The 40.13 m-long "Long Bench" offers panoramic views over Klingenthal and Zwota and provides a striking highlight for anyone wishing to include a special viewpoint in their tour.
Music, Dialect and Collections
Zwota can also be discovered through its cultural offerings. The Zwota Dialect and Experience Centre presents books featuring dialect literature, films from the region and constantly changing special exhibitions. In the centre of the village, the Eibisch Depot is located in the former Denk brewery. Its exhibition includes historical woodworking tools, historic toys and an annual Christmas display.
The history of musical instruments is another special theme. The Zwota Accordion Museum has a collection of more than 1,000 instruments. The collection includes harmonicas, diatonic button accordions, concertinas from the 19th century and accordions in various designs. It also includes instruments from the "Arnold" bandoneon factory in Carlsfeld in the Erzgebirge, as well as top models from the former Klingenthal accordion works. Families with different interests can therefore combine a day of hiking with a museum visit or an exhibition.
Events and Special Stories of the Village
The Zwota fair is a three-day festival with music and a marquee from Friday to Sunday. It takes place ten weeks after Pentecost. In addition, the Dialect and Film Evening in Zwota is held every year on 27 December. The first event at the open-air theatre was held for the Zwota Forest Stage on 21 August 2021; regular performances resumed there from 2022. You can take these dates and historical details into account when planning the timing of your trip, without focusing your stay exclusively on a single activity.
Another way to experience Zwota from a storytelling perspective is offered by Georg Carsten Eibisch. He leads tours through Zwota either dressed as a night watchman by the light of a bull's-eye lantern or as a barrel organ player with musical accompaniment. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you primarily want to include hiking routes, museums or an event in your itinerary. Then check which location within Zwota is most practical for your planned activities.
