Discover Trieb: Village History in the Trieb Valley
Accommodation in Trieb
Trieb combines a distinctive landscape with vivid village history. The village lies in the Bergen-Lauterbach granite basin and in the Trieb Valley. Those who wish to combine a trip with cultural discoveries will find various points of interest here: a museum in a former school, traces of the history of milling, evidence of stonemasonry and historical links to the Bergen, Trieb and Schönau parish.
Landscape and Local History in the Trieb Valley
The location in the Trieb Valley gives Trieb its own distinctive landscape setting. At the same time, disused sand pits and former quarries tell of a time when stonemasonry was established in the village. These traces make the local history understandable not only through dates, but also through the materials and work that were once part of life in Trieb.
Vogtland Village Rooms: History to Experience
An important cultural point of interest is the “Vogtland Village Rooms”. Since 1995, they have been housed in the former “School of Trieb and Schönau”, built in 1881. The museum is designed as a hands-on museum: not everything is hidden under glass or behind barriers. As a result, the focus is not only on historical objects, but also on an engaging encounter with everyday village life.
The exhibition extends across seven themed rooms. They present Vogtland customs, traditions and things that have almost been forgotten. Visitors can view tools from old and traditional crafts and relive “Great-Grandmother’s Washing Day”. A separate section is also devoted to the former “Voigtland State Railway”, particularly the Herlasgrün–Oelsnitz line. Surviving texts, historical documents and photographs depict this railway history.
Mill, Village Square and Church Path
The history of milling is also part of the village landscape. The mill for grinding and sawing was mentioned in 1464; its building is now the oldest building in the village. A replica mill wheel on the village square, reconstructed in 2001, commemorates this history. In Trieb, several historical themes can therefore be connected without turning them into a single narrative: milling, craftsmanship, railways and village traditions each have their own place.
Since 1529, Bergen, Trieb and Schönau have formed an independent Protestant parish. The church path served as a footpath to the church and cemetery in Bergen. This historical connection is particularly interesting for your travel planning if you are interested in the religious history of the area and former routes between places.
