Culture

After the Reformation, Hochkirch developed into a centre of the Protestant Sorbs. A pastor in Hochkirch was one of the translators of the Bible into Sorbian. The first Sorbian superintendency was based in Hochkirch.

The historic church ensemble includes a Protestant church with a Baroque tower, a 13th-century baptismal font, a church door with bullet holes, a monument to Jacob von Keith, two obelisks in the churchyard, a hand-forged tower clock mechanism from 1751, and the Lehnsche crypt from the 17th century.

Niethen rampart is described as one of the best-preserved and most imposing fortifications in Upper Lusatia.

Every January, the concert and ballroom hosts a Bird Wedding programme by the Sorbian National Ensemble.
