Weitersglashütte combines the history of an old glassmaking settlement with the landscapes and trails of the Ore Mountains ridge. The place originated as a settlement devoted entirely to glassmaking after a glassworks was founded here in 1624. Operations have been suspended since 1907. The historic glassworks produced simple panes as well as beer, wine, laboratory and pharmacy glass. Anyone wishing to combine a trip with nature experiences and a specific historical connection will find both here in various forms.

Hiking trails with different route profiles

Weitersglashütte is a starting point for hiking, cycling and ski tours in both summer and winter. Several clearly named routes are available for planning day trips. The “Hike along the Ore Mountains ridge” is an 8.8-kilometre circular hike around the Carlsfeld Reservoir and starts in Weitersglashütte. Those looking for a longer ridge hike can choose the 18.3-kilometre “Along the ridge to Bohemia” route. It runs via Henneberg to Hirschenstand / Jelení (CZ) and back.

The 15.5-kilometre “Double Pass on the Ore Mountains ridge” is a Saxon-Bohemian border-pass loop starting from Weitersglashütte. It reaches the Bohemian side via a historic mountain pass trail and runs mostly through a nature reserve. The trails must not be left there. Another historical perspective is offered by the 9.6-kilometre Carlsfeld / Weitersglashütte mining educational trail. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether the focus should be on a shorter circular hike, an extended ridge route or a trail with a cultural and historical emphasis.

Water views, raised bog and winter trails

The “Forest Trails and Water Views in Carlsfeld” circular hike also begins in Weitersglashütte, follows the ridge trail and forest paths to the Carlsfeld Reservoir and then leads back. This route is not signposted on site; digital route data is required for planning it. Stage 12 of the ridge trail leads from Weitersglashütte towards Carlsfeld, passing the Weitersglashütte raised-bog nature reserve.

In winter, the Kammloipe ski trail passes directly through the village and is used by cross-country skiers. Kammloipe Tour No. 7 is a 7-kilometre cross-country skiing loop from Carlsfeld-Weitersglashütte over the reservoir dam and back to Weitersglashütte. This makes it possible when planning a trip to compare hiking and cycling in the warmer months with a clearly described cross-country skiing option in winter, without limiting the character of the place to just one season.

Choose Weitersglashütte as your starting point

The designated P1 car park is located directly in Weitersglashütte. The place is particularly interesting when searching for accommodation if you want to plan your excursions around named trails and route lengths. Families and other travel groups can therefore decide in advance whether a 7-kilometre cross-country skiing loop, an 8.8-kilometre circular hike or a longer border-pass loop is the better fit for their plans. You can also include Carlsfeld and Wildenthal in your further search.
