Discover Sehma: Hiking Trails, Crafts and Art Nouveau

Sehma combines a distinctive location in the Ore Mountains with routes for active exploration and its own cultural character. The village lies at around 600 m above sea level between the table mountains of Bärenstein, 898 m, to the east, Scheibenberg, 807 m, to the west, and Pöhlberg, 832 m, to the north. This setting gives a trip to Sehma a clear landscape character: you can combine excursions into the mountains with regional history, crafts and church art.

Hiking trails with different destinations

For hikers, the Firstenweg is a particularly versatile way to experience Sehma as a starting point. In a southerly direction, you can follow this trail to the Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal. If you prefer a different cultural destination, follow the Firstenweg north from Sehma to Frohnauer Hammer. This allows you to include both a nature experience and a visit to a historic destination in your travel plans, without the two excursions having the same focus.

Another hike leads from Sehma to the forest lodge in Buchholz Forest. This route can be reached by the Ore Mountains Railway to Sehma station. This may be of interest when planning your trip if you would like to combine a hike with travel by train. The hike from Sehma to the Firstenweg also follows part of the fully signposted Stoneman Miriquidi mountain-bike route as far as the Firstenweg. The Sehmatal municipality has a well-developed and signposted network for hiking, cycling and ski hiking. Trails connect the municipality with Oberwiesenthal and Annaberg; the Kammweg long-distance quality hiking trail continues from the eastern Ore Mountains into the Vogtland. Circular routes lead through meadows and forests around the individual districts. The Sehmaer Höhe between Walthersdorf and Sehma is also a starting point for hikes, walks and cycling tours. Ore Mountain Traditions and Church Art

Sehma is more than just a starting point for trails. Traditional Ore Mountain crafts such as bobbin lacemaking and woodcarving are still practised in local clubs and passed on to younger generations. For families, this cultural focus provides an opportunity to discover the special features of the Ore Mountains together.

A notable cultural destination is St. Paul’s Church in Sehma. It contains rare Art Nouveau paintings and is a typical Art Nouveau church in its interior design. It was built in 1898/99. Christ Church complements this ecclesiastical landscape: it was built and consecrated on 12 February 1922. As a utilitarian building, it incorporates some Art Nouveau influences. Those interested in architecture, painting and the development of sacred spaces will therefore find a range of different historical highlights in Sehma.

The Water Landscape in the Surrounding Area

The Cranzahl drinking-water reservoir is located near Sehma. Access to the shore, swimming and boating are not permitted there. However, a circular trail leads around the reservoir. The reservoir is therefore not suitable as a swimming destination, but can be regarded as a scenic reference point for a walk in the surrounding area. Together with the hiking trails and forest and meadow routes, this creates travel plans in which you can choose between mountain paths, cultural destinations and a circuit around the reservoir.
