History

Osterburg’s history can be traced through several centuries at St. Nicolai: the church’s basic structure dates from the second half of the 12th century. In the mid-13th century, it was transformed into a three-aisled Gothic brick hall church. Around 1484, St. Nicolai received its choir and the All Saints’ Chapel, which now serves as the sacristy. Even today, almost the entire medieval town centre can be circumnavigated along a promenade laid out around 1800 beside the former inner defensive wall.

Culture

The district museum presents the history of the town and district of Osterburg from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The museum also offers guided tours and themed events for school classes and groups. The traditional Osterburg Easter Market features crafts, music and regional specialities.

Nature

Osterburg lies on the Biese, which is associated with one of Germany’s last river swimming areas. The Biesebad offers leisure activities, camping and pedal-boat rides in a protected river landscape.

Krumke Park features a boxwood hedge described as probably more than 400 years old. In 2002, the park was included in the Gartenträume project. It remains open to the public and was included in the state of Saxony-Anhalt’s Gartenträume project.

Trails and leisure activities

Osterburg has the signposted, 15-kilometre basic hiking route known as the Landspaziergang. The 479-kilometre Altmark Circuit also runs directly through the town.

The historic route known as Lutherallee, and further along the Alte Krumker Weg, can be travelled on foot or by bicycle to Osterburg. The Krumke Riding, Driving and Tourism Association offers horse riding, vaulting and carriage rides.

Krumke’s Cavaliers’ House is home to a cultural café and a wine bistro and hosts concerts, readings and lectures.

Local highlights

Asparagus cultivation has been associated with Osterburg since 1929 through August Huchel’s first asparagus growers’ association. During the annual Asparagus Festival and Asparagus Week, numerous restaurants serve Altmark specialities and a wide variety of asparagus dishes.
