Culture and History

The town park is described as a complex with two castles, a tea house, and a mausoleum. The New Castle stands in the southeastern part of the park. It was built in 1909 based on an Italian model; replicas of sphinxes stand on both sides of its staircase. The coat of arms of the Wagenführ von Arnim family is displayed above its portal.

The local history museum presents historical materials from the area in 12 themed rooms. It covers the history of industrial culture and the founders of the ironworks, documents Tangerhütte’s development from Väthen to a district town, and also includes material on the development of agriculture and crafts.

Briest Palace is a two-wing brick half-timbered building dating from 1624 with older elements. It is described as one of the last preserved aristocratic estates of its kind in northeastern Germany. The cast-iron pavilion in the town park received a gold medal at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair. Hans Euler is credited with building 16,517 ships in bottles.

Tangerhütte’s town park covers 12 hectares and was laid out in 1872 in the English and French garden styles. Paths and footbridges through the natural area around Tangerhütte are described as suitable for cycling and hiking.

Local Character

The sandy geest around Tangerhütte is associated with asparagus cultivation. Fresh asparagus is available from the end of April until St. John’s Day and is served in Altmark restaurants.
