Krosigk: Castle, Mills and Landscape
Accommodation in Krosigk
Krosigk combines an impressive local history with mills, a distinctive porphyry hill and a variety of opportunities for walks, hikes and cycling tours. Anyone planning a trip can combine historical discoveries here with a break by the mill pond and excursions through the agricultural surroundings.
Castle, Church and Special Testaments to the Local History
Krosigk Castle is at the heart of the area’s cultural history. It was first documented in 927 as “castrum croszok” and was originally a moated castle. The keep was probably built as a defensive tower in the 9th century. This gives the castle complex several historical points of interest for anyone interested not only in a single building but also in the development of the village.
The village church is also one of the defining historic sites. Construction began in 1152 on a hill above the village. The dovecote tower on the parish grounds also commemorates the year 1729: it was erected as a “monument of gratitude” by “faithful souls.” The local history room on Fleischergasse is the local history museum of the Krosigk Cultural and Local History Association and provides further insight into the area’s history.
Mills, Mill Pond and Landscape
The Krosigk watermill is used as an excursion restaurant and museum. On June 9, 2025, its new waterwheel was ceremonially put into operation. Every second weekend, there is also an opportunity to view the old milling equipment. Another fascinating mill story is told by the Krosigk post mill: it was moved from Gollma to Krosigk in 1995, destroyed in a storm in 2007 and rebuilt by 2010.
By the mill pond, there is a spacious, well-maintained green area with a barbecue area, playgrounds, a Kneipp facility, orchards and art. Those traveling with children will find playgrounds there as a practical opportunity for a break between sightseeing stops. The Horchen recreation area also includes a fitness trail by the large oak tree in the direction of the watermill. The Windmill Hill is a distinctive porphyry hill in the intensively farmed surrounding area. The east-facing semi-dry grasslands around Krosigk and Kaltenmark provide habitats for grasshoppers, ground beetles, wild bees and butterflies.
Cycling Tours and Routes for Different Day Plans
For an extended cycling loop, the 92.98-kilometer “Saalekreis Northwest in One Day” cycling route also passes through Krosigk. The approximately 60-kilometer Wettin West Route leads past the Krosigk castle complex and fortified church via a detour. Shorter is the approximately 20-kilometer half-day tour “Around the Petersberg,” whose main destination is the Krosigk castle complex and fortified church. The different route lengths make it easier for you to choose between an extensive cycling tour and a more compact excursion.
Information boards by the mill pond show walkers, hikers and cycling tourists ways to explore the region. This allows you to tailor your stay according to your interests, focusing more on historical destinations, physical activity or observing nature, without being limited to a single form of travel.
