Uftrungen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Uftrungen lies in the Thyra Valley beside wooded hills connected to the Schabeleite and Alter Stolberg protected areas. Near the settlement, Heimkehle is known locally as a remarkable gypsum karst cave.

Nature

As a karst show cave, Heimkehle offers tours of underground lakes and large caverns. The cave is approximately two kilometres long, 700 metres of which are developed for tourism. It can only be explored as part of a guided tour.

The guided tour of Heimkehle is wheelchair-accessible. Visitors need a helmet, warm clothing and suitable footwear, as the cave has an average year-round temperature of around 8 °C.

Culture and History

Heimkehle combines a visit to a natural cave with a memorial experience. The “Kleine Dom” memorial and commemorative markers along the tour route commemorate the victims of forced labour and Nazi persecution connected with the wartime use of the cave.

Gastronomy

Outside Heimkehle, there is a restaurant serving regional and seasonal dishes. Seating is available indoors and outdoors.
