Near Sommersdorf, Marienborn has once again been a pilgrimage site since the early 1990s. The command tower of the Marienborn Memorial to the Division of Germany can be visited as part of a guided tour.
Culture and History
The Protestant Church of Sommersdorf is a hall church dating from 1717 with a narrow rectangular tower. Its eastern wall contains preserved Romanesque remains indicating the existence of a predecessor church. Inside, the church has a wooden barrel-vaulted ceiling and a horseshoe-shaped gallery. The pulpit basket features carved figures of Christ and the four Evangelists.
Near Sommersdorf, the Sommerschenburg castle complex includes a keep dating from the 12th century with battlements added in the 19th century. The castle complex's English-style landscaped park contains a Gneisenau monument and an 1841 mausoleum. The lower part of a residential building from the 11th century has also been preserved.
The Gneisenau Museum was opened in the former schoolhouse in Sommerschenburg. A wayside cross of atonement is believed to date from the 15th century.
Hiking
The archaeological and historical Marienborn Trail runs year-round through archaeological and historical sites from all periods of regional history. It leads to the Bullerspring and Wirpke Spring, where hikers can take a break and refresh themselves.
The Dorn and Born circular trail starts at the hiking map on Ernst-Thälmann-Straße in Sommersdorf and returns there via Hartmannshausen, Marienborn and Sommerschenburg. It is classified as moderately difficult, is 10.5 kilometres long and includes 160 metres of ascent.
Landscape
The landscape between Sommersdorf and Marienborn includes large areas used for agriculture, while the Aller lowlands have traditionally been used as grassland. The Harbke section includes extensive beech forests in the Harbke Forest.
