History and Culture

On the market square opposite the town hall stands the Kroppenstedt Freikreuz, which is just under 4.5 metres high. The ornate sandstone monument bears municipal and Brandenburg coats of arms, as well as civic coats of arms from the 17th century. A wooden Freikreuz is documented as early as 1248, before Kroppenstedt was granted town rights in 1253; in the 14th century, it was associated with the town’s jurisdiction. The present sandstone Freikreuz was created in 1651 by stonemason Martin Kugler from Seehausen and ceremonially inaugurated on 24 July 1651.

The Kroppenstedt Local History Museum is housed in a former boys’ school built in 1564. It presents regional history, traditions, everyday life, historic crafts and industrial history, as well as the Freikreuz, the town rights and the history of the Kroppenstedt horsemen and riding hides.

Information boards in Kroppenstedt guide visitors along a town tour focusing on the former town wall under the heading “Hidden Treasures on the Romanesque Road”. St. Martini features Romanesque elements and was repeatedly remodelled and extended during the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The church building has a three-aisled nave from the late 15th century, a Renaissance south aisle, construction of which began in 1593, and a north aisle completed in 1616.

The present town hall was founded in 1598 and built in the Late Gothic style.

Kroppenstedt’s town wall is an important testament to medieval fortification and continues to shape the townscape. It was first mentioned in the Hadmersleben Chronicle in 1367. It consisted of a double ring of walls up to four metres high, several defensive towers and three town gates. The Owl Tower is the former gate tower of the western church gate and is still well preserved; it is topped by a Baroque cupola.

Landscape

In the regional context, the Southern Börde is described as a fertile black-earth landscape. The district extends northwards towards the wetlands of the Drömling.
