Culture
The Bettinger Mühle complex houses a mill museum with preserved historic equipment and a functioning old mill wheel. The Mennonite Room at Bettinger Mühle presents the history of the Mennonites in the Schmelz area. History
The Birg in Schmelz-Limbach is an excavated hillfort that was used from the late Celtic period through the early Middle Ages. Information boards at the Birg explain its eventful history. The Bettinger Schmelze was founded in the early 18th century.
Nature
The Prims flows through Schmelz, which is surrounded by wooded ridges shaped by Permian volcanic activity. The wetland adjoining the Engelgrundweiher pond is part of the 32.3-hectare Engelgrund-Girtelwiese nature reserve.
Things to Do
A marked 170-kilometre network of circular trails leads through hilly, wooded landscapes with viewpoints. The Traumschleifen trails in Schmelz are circular routes between 6 and 18 kilometres long. Two Traumschleifen can be hiked in Schmelz: the Bach- und Burrenpfad and the Erzgräberweg.
The premium hiking trails are signposted with distance-based waymarking in accordance with the standards of the German Hiking Institute, as indicated by their trail designation. Geologischer Schmelz is an 18-kilometre themed trail with two hiking sections and a marked shortcut. The Raubritterpfad Limbach is a 3.2-kilometre trail from the hiking car park at Limbach railway station to the Birg hillfort.
The 7-kilometre Prims-Theel Erlebnisweg is family-friendly and largely barrier-free. The trail connects Schmelz via Primsweiler with Nalbach and Lebach.
