Merzig Viez is a regional cider associated with the city’s long tradition of apple cultivation and with the Merzig Viez Festival. During the festival, which takes place every year, the city centre becomes a Viez Mile with regional food stalls, Merzig Viez and music stages.

Nature

Traditional orchards are a typical landscape feature in Merzig and are described as a long-standing cultural heritage and a valuable habitat. There are around 58,000 fruit trees in the orchards within the municipality of Merzig. The NABU Apple Variety Garden on the Nackberg was established with the support of the city and welcomes visitors.

At Blättelborn Pond, information boards provide information about insects, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds; habitat features there support endangered species.

Wildlife

Wolfspark-Werner-Freund offers a free talk at the enclosure of the white wolves on the first Sunday of each month; group tours are available by prior arrangement. At Merzig’s Animal and Ark Park, visitors can encounter native animals such as forest goats and sheep, as well as a large aviary. Guided tours focus on endangered domestic animal breeds and provide access behind the scenes.

Culture

The Fellenbergmühle Precision Engineering Museum preserves a fully operational precision engineering workshop that was set up in 1927 in a former mill founded in 1767. Fellenbergmühle documents the transition from artisanal to industrial production and factory work.

The Merzig Psychiatry Museum explores the history of psychiatry and the former Merzig psychiatric hospital through documents, photographs, audio recordings and film material. The museum can be visited by prior arrangement with its staff; the Park of Those Who Think Differently is accessible above the clinic.

Getting Around

A cycling route of just over 9 kilometres starts at Merzig-Stadtmitte station, follows the Saar to Besseringen and returns via Merzig harbour.
