Hilgert: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Hilgert is described as one of the oldest pottery centers for blue-grey stoneware. Archaeological finds indicate that local potters followed all stages of the craft’s development through to the 18th century.

Culture

The Pfeifenbäckerei, also known as Pfeiffestuff, is a cultural monument in Hilgert at Schulstraße 18. In the historic pipe bakery, clay pipe molds were produced using two-part molds. The finished clay pipes were fired for twelve hours at 950 °C. A clay pipe workshop in Hilgert is described as one of the last traces of this craft and continues the tradition of handmade production.

Clay pipe makers are first documented in Hilgert in 1754; in 1792, a separate guild of pipe makers was founded there.

History

The name Hilgert was first mentioned in 1349 in a letter of atonement, that is, a letter of reconciliation. The modern form of the place name Hilgert appeared by 1772 at the latest on a map by J. F. Düntzfeld. The place name may be derived from “Hilligrod,” interpreted as “holy clearing.”

Hiking and Landscapes

The Westerwald Association’s HWW3 long-distance hiking trail runs through Hilgert as part of its 97.9-kilometer route from Au to Bad Ems.

The HG5 begins at Waldstraße, leads through Hilgert, and then leaves the settlement. The route passes the GeoTop Glockenschächte, a relic of historical clay mining in the Kannenbäckerland region. It crosses open grazing areas and descends through woodland into the Masselbach valley. The section of the HG5 in the Masselbach valley follows floodplain meadows and woodland toward Hundsdorf. The route description notes landscapes in bloom in spring in wooded areas that are regenerating after earlier clearing.

The HG5 is described as a moderately difficult, 11.3-kilometer hiking route with approximately 195 meters of ascent and a stated duration of 3.1 hours.

Cycling

A cycling route around Höhr-Grenzhausen continues through the forest toward Hilgert.

Getting There

Hilgert can be reached via Landesstraße 307 from Höhr-Grenzhausen and Ransbach-Baumbach. On weekdays and weekends, VRM bus route 425 connects the village with Höhr-Grenzhausen, Ransbach-Baumbach, Wirges, and Montabaur. Public parking is available at the sports field on Waldstraße.
