Landscape

Eschbach is a wine-growing village at the foot of the Rotenberg, where the Wasgau and the Rhine Plain meet. Above Eschbach, Madenburg is described as an imperial castle dating from the 11th century and one of the largest castle complexes in the Palatinate, offering panoramic views over the Rhine Plain.

Culture and Village Character

Eschbach is home to the “Eschbach Donkey” experience trail, featuring 38 artistically designed donkeys displayed in streets, squares, courtyards, and front gardens. The route leads through winding lanes past historic fountains and Renaissance houses. The local nickname “Donkey” is probably connected with the owners of Madenburg in the 15th century, who belonged to a knightly and tournament society called “with the donkey”.

The village character includes a late Gothic village fountain and many Renaissance houses from the 16th century. Rococo figures stand in front of Eschbach’s Catholic parish church, which is dated 1766. St. Ludwig Parish Church is a historic landmark on the Sternenweg.

The Eschbach wine press is a historic oak wine press that was used to press grapes for wine production. It was restored in 1994. The Rutschbrunnen fountain was built in 1993 by sculptor Burghard Knauf to commemorate the Eschbach Rutsch. The ruins of Madenburg are listed as a cultural monument under Section 8 of the Monument Protection Act of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Nature

Eschbach Nature Park Trail 4 is an easy 5.9-kilometre hike with 120 metres of ascent and descent. The starting point and finish are at the Madenburg hiking car park. Along the route, there are viewpoints overlooking the Wasgau hills, the vineyards of the Southern Wine Route, the Rhine Plain, and Madenburg on the Haardt edge.

At the starting point of Eschbach Nature Park Trail 4 stands a small forest chapel dating from 1828, which is one of Eschbach’s cultural monuments. From the starting and finishing point, Madenburg is another kilometre away along the Pfälzer Weinsteig trail markings. Stage 9 of the Pfälzer Weinsteig leads directly past Eschbach and then uphill to Madenburg.

Cycling

The German Wine Route Cycle Path runs through Eschbach between Leinsweiler and Klingenmünster. The Trifelsland Tour follows the Wine Route to Eschbach and then continues to Leinsweiler.
