Niedertiefenbach: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Niedertiefenbach lies in the deeply incised Hasenbach Valley, a scenic area locally described as the “Einrich Switzerland”.

Nature

Along the Limes Trail are well-preserved rows of fruit trees where tree sparrows, starlings, blue tits and great tits breed. Between Holzhausen and Obertiefenbach, the trail runs alongside hedgerows where red-backed shrikes can be observed breeding in summer. The Limes Trail also offers views of the upper Hasenbach Valley, where Niedertiefenbach lies directly on the Hasenbach.

Trails

Near Pohl, an information panel explains that excavation findings identified the former fort as an earth-and-timber fort. The route continues over the Weißler Höhe and through the Jammertal to the Dörsbachtal Trail.

Niedertiefenbach is listed in the network of the Three Forts Circular Trail in the Rhine-Lahn World Heritage Region. This network includes circular hiking and cycling routes as well as connecting trails. The Pohl–Sauerbrunnen Marienfels section is approximately 6 km long and takes about two hours.

Culture

The Protestant Church “Zum Heilig Kreuz” in Niedertiefenbach is documented as one of the oldest churches in the Lahn region and was first mentioned in 1185. Its historical features include a Schöler organ from 1752, a baptismal font dating from the late 16th century, 16th-century carvings of the Apostles, and medieval gallery frescoes.

History

The Jewish cemetery northwest of Niedertiefenbach in the Hasenbach Valley was probably established at the beginning of the 19th century and used until 1937. It contains 28 gravestones, many of which bear inscriptions in Hebrew and German.

Jewish families had already been living in Niedertiefenbach before the middle of the 19th century. The Jewish residents formed a synagogue district together with the Jewish communities of Obertiefenbach and Roth. During the Holocaust, eight people were murdered who had been born in Niedertiefenbach or had lived there for a long time.

Historically, Niedertiefenbach belonged to the County of Einrich and to Vierherrisch. In 1816, together with the Hessian Lower County, the village became part of the Duchy of Nassau.
