Rheinböllen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Along the Way

The Puricelli Circular Trail passes the Luther Bell Monument, the Protestant vicarage, the Puricelli Foundation and the Marien Chapel. The route also includes the old cemetery of Rheinböllen, where historic gravestones have been preserved. The trail reaches the car park of Rheinböllen Wildlife Park, where hikers can choose to visit the park. A detour leads to a 400-year-old oak designated as a natural monument; its trunk circumference is more than 5.50 metres.

From a viewpoint along the Puricelli Circular Trail, the view stretches across Rheinböllen towards Ellern. The route also passes a naturally formed biotope.

Nature and Wildlife

At Hochsteinchen, a 648-metre-high rock formation on the eastern edge of the Großer Soon, visitors can climb a steel tower protected as a cultural monument. The 18-metre-high tower has two platforms and offers views towards the Bad Kreuznach district and the neighbouring Palatinate.

The fourth stage of the Soonwaldsteig leads from Ellerspring to the Rheinböllerhütte in Rheinböllen. It crosses the Glashütter Wiesen nature reserve, with its rare flowers and summer grasses, and touches the Katzenkopf natural forest reserve, an old beech forest. The Hochsteinchen tour starts and ends at the Schanzerkopf car park; there is a rest area with a hut at Hochsteinchen.

Rheinböllen Wildlife Park is home to more than 35 animal species, including European bison, brown bears, wolves, kangaroos, otters, llamas, raccoons and several domestic animal breeds. It is largely accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. The wildlife park's Wald-Bistro serves regional specialities and snacks; the terrace overlooks the lake.

Culture and History

Under the Puricellis, the Rheinböllerhütte ironworks experienced an industrial heyday in the 19th century. The chapel of the Puricelli Foundation in Rheinböllen was built in 1887 and 1888 in the Neo-Gothic style. Its Neo-Gothic mosaic floor is described as unique in Rhineland-Palatinate because of its size and colouring.

Rheinböllen is said to have already had a marketplace within its walls in the 12th century; its market rights are documented between 1314 and 1347.
