Luxem

Luxem combines a distinctly rural character with tangible traces of its history: a Streckhof farmstead dating from the 18th century, a chapel with older works of art, and recurring village festivals. At Schulstraße 4 is a Streckhof, a partly solid half-timbered building dating from the 18th century. The first chapel in Luxem was built in 1686. During the night of 24 March 1966, a side wall of the old chapel collapsed. The Baroque altar had previously been moved to safety and was installed in the newly built chapel. Windows, doors and parts of the old chapel’s pews were also reused in the new building. This history shows how individual elements were carried forward into the new building.

The chapel’s furnishings include an early 19th-century Madonna and Child statue, as well as Baroque wooden figures of John the Baptist and Saint Roch. A small organ was installed in 1883. The items’ different dates of origin, spanning the Baroque period through the 19th century, give the chapel a layered art-historical character.

Finds from Roman times are also part of the village’s history: they suggest that the area was settled in antiquity. This means Luxem’s settlement history reaches further back than the architectural and artistic evidence mentioned above.

Village festivals throughout the year

Every year, Luxem holds its village festival at the village community centre at the end of June. It is organised by the Schützenkapelle, the music club within the village’s largest association, the Schützenverein. The Kirmes takes place every third weekend in July.
