Culture
Rheinstein Castle was built in the 14th century as a customs castle. The castle can be explored on a self-guided tour using an information system and floor plan. From the car park, it can be reached via a steadily uphill footpath of around 380 metres in approximately six to ten minutes. Rheinstein Castle is not wheelchair accessible.
Reichenstein Castle stands on a rocky promontory almost directly above the Rhine. It was rebuilt between 1899 and 1902 as a neo-Gothic residential palace and opened to the public in 1936. The castle museum is dedicated to knights and Rhine Romanticism and offers an audio guide. Also on display are armour, weapons and hunting trophies from around the world, as well as a collection of decorative stove tiles from the Rheinböllerhütte.
In the knights’ room at Reichenstein Castle, children can dress up and ride a wooden horse. The castle complex combines history, nature and picturesque views. The Clemens Chapel below Reichenstein is associated with two local origin stories. Rheinstein Castle and Reichenstein Castle, together with the Clemens Chapel situated by the river, are described as highlights of the cultural heritage near Trechtingshausen.
Paths and Nature
A local circular trail links the two castles and the Clemens Chapel with the Morgenbach Valley, the surrounding valleys and the Schweizerhaus viewpoint. Trechtingshausen is a place for hiking and climbing near the forests and rocks of the Morgenbach Valley. The RheinBurgenWeg trail also passes through the village on a stage from Bingen to Trechtingshausen.
Landscape and Cuisine
The Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site focuses on preserving historic castles and towns, steep-slope viticulture, and habitats of rare animal and plant species. Restaurant Puricelli at Reichenstein Castle uses seasonal cuisine and ingredients from the surrounding area.
Getting There
The journey by Mittelrheinbahn from Bingen Central Station to Trechtingshausen takes approximately four minutes; Trechtingshausen is the first stop after Bingen Hbf. Reichenstein Castle can be reached from Bingen Central Station by taking the Mittelrheinbahn to Trechtingshausen. The walk from Trechtingshausen railway station to Reichenstein Castle takes approximately five to seven minutes.
