Manubach: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Manubach has been part of the Upper Middle Rhine UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003. Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Manubach can then continue searching for accommodation.

Nature

The signposted St. Oswald Loop is a 10.7-kilometre circular hiking trail around Manubach. It passes through meadows, fields, forests, vineyards, fallow land and goat pastures and offers viewpoints, benches, a shelter and a picnic area.

The Wiesen am Hirtenborn nature reserve covers approximately 253 hectares and includes parts of Manubach, Oberdiebach, Oberheimbach and Weiler bei Bingen. As a connected biotope complex, the area protects and develops a large, near-natural open landscape with adjacent forests in the Binger Wald.

Culture

St. Oswald in Manubach is a late Romanesque church described as an outstanding example of an old rural church. The Gothic choir stalls were created by the woodcarver Erhard Falckener from Abensberg. As a simple hall church without a choir, it brings the worship space close to the congregation; its interior has a Reformation character.

Together with the old school from 1832, the old rectory from 1780 and the half-timbered houses on the Schadenbach, it forms the village centre. Numerous well-preserved half-timbered houses dating from the mid-16th century to the early 19th century stand around the church and at the upper end of Manubach. The historic houses are predominantly oriented towards the street with their gables; they often bear sayings on the threshold beams and paintings of vines beneath the eaves of the gables.

The Zuckerstübbche opened in 2017 and grew out of a 40-year passion for collecting items related to sugar. The core collection comprises around 130,000 different sugar cubes, sachets and sticks. The collection also includes promotional items, historical sugar-processing equipment, sugarloaves and stories about sugar. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; admission is free.

History

From the 14th century onwards, Manubach was fortified with walls, towers and an outer thorn hedge. The church was also fortified in the past and could serve as a refuge and fortified church in times of need. No remains of the former fortifications have survived; however, street and field names still refer to them.

The vineyards St. Oswald, Mönchwingert, Heilgarten and Langgarten are associated with Manubach.
