Bechtheim: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Bechtheim is described as an old wine-growing village situated in a hollow and surrounded by vineyards. The Romanesque Basilica of St. Lambertus dates from the 11th century and is one of the most significant Romanesque village churches in Rheinhessen.

Culture

The building has a choir gallery, a barrel-vaulted crypt and wall paintings from the 14th century. In the Middle Ages, it was a pilgrimage church.

North and south of the basilica stand the Lambertus Fountain and the Aegidius Fountain. Both are connected to the crypt’s underground pilgrims’ passage.

South of the Catholic church lies Hof Uexküll, an 18th-century residence. The year 1583 is engraved in its arched gateway.

At the Fischmarkt and Kelterstein, a 3,820-kilogram press stone is on display. It was found after a fire in the manor house of Baron von der Leyen-Uexküll opposite. The weighing house there is a reminder that grape carts and the “Wutz” were weighed here.

Bechtheim Protestant Church has a 38-metre-high tower and was inaugurated in 1910 after 17 months of construction. Its interior follows the Wiesbaden Program; the altar, organ and pulpit are aligned along a single sightline.

Trails

The wine educational trail in Bechtheim follows a signposted route through the vineyards. Along the way, there is information about grape varieties and historic agricultural equipment, vineyard plantings and rest areas, as well as views over Bechtheim and the surrounding hill country. Access is via Steig at the Warte.

Bechtheim is a marked intermediate destination on the Wonnegau section of the RheinTerrassenWeg between Osthofen and Mettenheim. The stage combines vineyards, views over the hills of Rheinhessen and the Rhine plain with Bechtheim’s Romanesque basilica and its wines.

The Kuhbrunnen is part of a signposted circular trail; historically, it was used to water livestock. The Wundersame Wonnegau Tour “The Mystery of the Monk Benedict” is an approximately five-kilometre route through Bechtheim’s vineyards and romantic lanes. After the ceremony, a procession led by the wine pilgrim makes its way to a wine tasting in Bechtheim’s vineyards.

Landscape

The sulphur spring is located next to the barbecue area; sulphur-containing water emerges from it.

History

The foundation stone for the Former Bechtheim Synagogue was laid in 1855. In 1900, the local community acquired the building to use it as a kindergarten. It continues to be used as a Protestant parish hall.

Bechtheim lies north of Worms, a few kilometres from the A61 motorway and the Rhine.
