Marienthal: Monastic Culture, Wine and Trails in the Ahr Valley
Accommodation in Marienthal
Marienthal combines wine, history and active exploration within a compact thematic area. The former Augustinian convent, the Kloster Marienthal winery, signposted hiking trails and the Ahr Cycle Route give your trip different focal points. Those looking for a holiday apartment can therefore choose their location based on whether quiet cultural experiences, winegrowing, or hiking and cycling are to shape their holiday.
Winegrowing and Refreshments at the Former Monastery
The Kloster Marienthal winery offers wine sales daily from 10:00 to 18:30. The restaurant is open daily from 11:00 to 18:30. This allows you to combine a stay in Marienthal with a visit to the winery without reducing the location to just one experience. From 2004 onwards, the old monastery ruins were transformed into a modern winery with a wine bar. Today, the winery is also a regular venue for cultural events.
This character can provide helpful guidance when choosing your accommodation: if you would like to combine wine and regional history, the focus is on the monastery grounds and the winery. On a trip with varied interests, however, the day can also be complemented by a hike or a cycling tour.
Monastery Ruins, Garden and Cultural Monument
The former Marienthal Augustinian convent, located in the Dernau municipal district, was founded in 1136 and completely rebuilt in 1699. The former Augustinian convent at Klosterstraße 3 is a registered cultural monument. The complex includes a hall-building ruin probably dating from the 17th century. A garden house dated 1762 stands in the baroque terrace garden.
The monastery ruins and monastery garden invite visitors to linger peacefully and stop for refreshments. Events and concerts of all kinds take place there regularly. For those interested in culture, Marienthal therefore offers more than a brief photo stop: traces of historic architecture, the garden grounds, dining and events can be experienced as different ways of engaging with the location. The so-called government bunker on the Silberberg adds to the historical spectrum. It is documented as a preserved section of the former alternative seat of the constitutional organs of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In the Ahr Valley, 203 metres of the former government bunker complex, which was 17.3 kilometres long in total, can still be visited as a documentation centre. 90-minute guided tours are offered.
Hiking and Cycling around Marienthal
The signposted Dernau Wine Hiking Route can be hiked over its total distance of 8.5 km or in sections. These two options allow for different day plans without requiring a specific walking time. The wine hiking route of the 5th Mittelahr Wine Autumn leads through the Klostergarten individual vineyard site in Marienthal and additionally connects winegrowing with the hiking theme.
Marienthal is also a distinctive reference point for cycle tourists: the Ahr Cycle Route leads as far as Marienthal. From the Marienthal section, the route continues along the left bank of the Ahr below the striking rock formation known as “Bunte Kuh”. The places between Altenahr and Marienthal are conveniently accessible by public transport.
