Culture and History

The historic centre of Ahrweiler is bounded by the town wall, four gate towers, watchtowers and the remains of a former moat, and parts of it are accessible without cars. The Museum of the City of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is located in a three-storey residential tower from the second half of the 13th century in Ahrweiler. Ahrweiler preserves a medieval-romantic character and is associated with Spätburgunder wine in the Ahr Valley.

At the Roman Villa in Ahrweiler, visitors walk through Roman rooms and experience the domestic culture and life of the Roman elite. The visit includes a model of the Roman estate and an audiovisual presentation. The Roman iron-smelting settlement can be reached from the Alte Mauer hikers’ car park via the Eisenweg trail.

A preserved section of the former government bunker serves as a museum about the Cold War. Visitors experience the government bunker as part of an approximately 90-minute guided tour. It was built from 1962 to 1971 as an alternative seat for the constitutional bodies of the Federal Republic of Germany and provided space for 3,000 people.

The House of the Marksmen offers visits and guided tours by appointment for groups of at least eight people. It presents Ahrweiler’s marksmen’s tradition with art-historical treasures from three centuries, uniforms, photographic documents and historic rifles.

Wine and Crafts

Bachem is a historic wine village known for Frühburgunder vines. The Bachemer Backes dates from 1650 and has housed the Winemakers’ Museum since 1978. The Winemakers’ Museum explains historical equipment used in viticulture and agriculture. It is housed in the village’s old bakehouse, which is still used for baking bread.

Walporzheim’s landscape features steep rock formations and the oldest surviving vineyard terraces in the Ahr Valley, dating back to the 12th century. The rock formations Bunte Kuh and Kaiserstuhl are distinctive landmarks associated with Walporzheim. Walporzheim is home to the Ahr’s oldest wine house, Gasthaus St. Peter, and is known for its outstanding wines.

Local Character

Bad Neuenahr’s spa identity is rooted in the Apollinaris spring discovered in 1852 and the Große Sprudel medicinal spring drilled in 1861. Art Nouveau buildings and the spa park preserve the historic character of the spa town; the town is focused on healing, alleviating and preventing illnesses as well as promoting health.

Cycling

A cycling tour starts at the spa park in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and leads via a detour on the Ahr cycle path in the direction of Remagen-Kripp.
