Xanten: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Xanten is known for its Archaeological Park. The town has a medieval, picturesque centre with Xanten Cathedral. The Gothic St. Viktor Cathedral is a five-aisled basilica and is associated with art and history.

Culture

The SiegfriedMuseum presents the reception of the Nibelung legends over a period of 600 years. At the LVR-RömerMuseum, archaeological finds provide insight into everyday life in the former Roman city. The park presents the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Lower Germanic Limes in the Limes Pavilion and the ship tent. During the summer months, visitors can watch the excavation team at work as part of the Live Excavation programme.

History

An APX workshop allows participants to handle, examine and describe genuine finds from Roman times. Guided APX tours showcase archaeological remains beneath the Harbour Temple, explain gladiatorial contests in the amphitheatre and let visitors experience the atmosphere of Roman baths in the hostel baths. A guided tour of the craftsmen’s houses explores how the inhabitants of Colonia Ulpia Traiana lived and worked.

A gladiator exhibition is located in the corridors of the amphitheatre. The reconstructed hostel baths illustrate Roman bathing with hypocausts, wall paintings and water basins. After the Capitol, the Harbour Temple was the second-largest temple in the city.

Nature

Xanten is nestled in the diverse natural and floodplain landscape of the Lower Rhine. This landscape features interconnected cycling and hiking trails. The NaturForum at Bislicher Insel houses the Floodplain Stories exhibition about floodplain habitats and the local wildlife. The Bislicher Insel nature reserve covers 1,200 hectares in an old bend of the Rhine; the area is associated with beavers and overwintering geese.

Spa Park

Xanten Spa Park was created from the town’s former fortification walls. Its accessible design supports walks around Xanten’s town centre. The spa park’s graduation tower produces salt-laden air, while the Kneipp facility offers a refreshing water treatment.

Activities

A high-ropes course with three climbing levels stands on the shore of the Xanten South Sea. Xanten Leisure Centre offers water skiing and wakeboarding on a cable system. Sailing boats, electric boats and pedal boats can be rented at the harbours of Xanten and Vynen.
