Kamen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture

St. Paul’s Church is a Romanesque church whose first construction dates back to the 12th century. Its slate-covered tower is considered a landmark of Kamen and leans westward, against the prevailing wind direction. The Old Market was originally the center of medieval Kamen and remains a meeting place and venue for events in the city center.

The Old Town Hall is a stucco building with a partially enclosed arcaded loggia and served as Kamen’s town hall until 1976. A remnant of the old city wall stands at the western entrance to Ostenmauer. It was built in the 13th century from green Anröchte sandstone. Methler is also home to St. Margaret’s Church, a late Romanesque hall church with the oldest known church roof construction in Westphalia.

The House of City History combines Kamen’s city history museum with a historical archive and research library. It is set up for public visits and offers exhibitions, guided tours, lectures, readings, concerts, and educational programs. The museum includes a model of Kamen around 1750, as well as a children’s station where replicas of medieval helmets and caps can be tried on. A historical city tour leads to important sites in the city center and lasts about 90 minutes.

The Five-Arch Bridge spans the Seseke and is one of the oldest railway bridges still in operation in Germany; it has been preserved in its original condition. At Kamen’s Technopark, the headframe and former changing-room building of the Monopol coal mine form part of the ensemble. Heeren Castle is an early Baroque moated castle that can be rented for weddings and conferences. The KamenKaiserau Sports Center is a training and continuing-education facility for the Westphalia football and athletics association.

Nature

The Seseke was transformed from a straight, concrete channel into a naturally designed, winding river with shallow-water zones and retention areas. The renaturation encouraged the return of flora and fauna and created new habitats. In the center of Kamen, Seseke Park features playgrounds, lawns for picnics, and a beach volleyball court next to the Seseke Cycle Path.

The Seseke Route also includes the Pixel Tube. It interprets the river’s transformation from a wastewater channel into a river using the means of landscape art.

Cycling

The beginner’s cycling tour around Kamen is 17 kilometers long and runs almost entirely along cycle paths away from motorized traffic. Kamen’s cycle paths pass artworks from the “Walking on Water” project, including “NOW and the River.” The public artwork uses stone gabions to frame views of the Seseke and explores time and change. Bicycle excursions along the Seseke and the Körne are listed among Kamen’s visitor activities.
