Accommodation in Niederbergheim
Niederbergheim combines the landscape of the Möhne Valley with a variety of opportunities for hiking, observing nature and discovering cultural history. The village is picturesquely situated in the Möhne valley on the edge of the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. This makes Niederbergheim suitable for travellers who want to spend their holiday between short walks, longer circular trails and special regional attractions.
Landscape in the Möhne Valley and Arnsberg Forest Nature Park
The natural area around Niederbergheim includes the Merpketal nature reserve. It protects a structurally diverse, open section of the Merpke valley and its tributaries. Dry and wet grassland, spring areas, aquatic habitats and wooded structures characterise this landscape. Those who do not want to visit just a single viewpoint during their holiday, but would rather experience different forms of nature, will find an interesting focus for planning their day here.
There are two hiking car parks for the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park in the Niederbergheim area: The car park on Schillingsweg is located on the western edge of the village, while another is situated on the Eisenberg along the L 856 between Niederbergheim and Hirschberg. From these starting points, various excursion plans can be combined without reducing the landscape to a single experience.
Hiking trails for different day plans
From the hiking car park on Schillingsweg, you can walk the marked circular trails A 9 and A 12. Trail A 9 is 7.4 kilometres long, while trail A 12 covers 3.2 kilometres. These two clearly designated routes offer a simple way to adapt your hiking plans to the time available. Those who prefer a longer route can choose A 9; A 12 is available for a shorter excursion.
Another option is the “Niederbergheim Circular Walk”, a short circular trail from Niederbergheim to Oberbergheim. In addition, the Skywalk-Möhnetal is located on the Liethhöhe between Niederbergheim and Allagen. It can be reached on foot from the designated car parks in 15 to 20 minutes and is accessible. The Skywalk is part of the LEADER project “3-Landschafts-Erlebniswelten” and provides a distinctive attraction among the excursion destinations around Niederbergheim.
History of Technology and Special Learning Locations
Niederbergheim also has a cultural-historical side. The Niederbergheim Mill was built in 1551. The “Old Sawmill Gate Niederbergheim” is located directly on the Möhne Valley Cycle Route and is a technical cultural monument. It commemorates the centuries-long importance of forestry and wood processing to the village. This allows a hike or cycling tour to be supplemented with a concrete insight into the region’s former working life.
The area between Warstein-Allagen and Niederbergheim is also home to “Möhnis Welt”, an extracurricular learning location in the Möhne meadows. For days out together with a variety of interests, this location can be included in the planning alongside the trails, the Skywalk and the cultural-historical sites.
