Eringerfeld: Castle, Forest and Circular Walking Trails
Accommodation in Eringerfeld
Eringerfeld combines Baroque architecture with marked circular walking trails and protected forest landscapes. This district of Geseke is therefore suitable for a trip that allows you to combine historical impressions with experiences in nature. Depending on your priorities, you can tailor your search for a holiday apartment or holiday home to the kind of day you wish to plan.
Baroque Traces Around Eringerfeld Castle
Eringerfeld Castle is a moated castle that was rebuilt between 1676 and 1699 by the cathedral canons Johann Gottfried and Rhabanus Christoph von Hörde as a family foundation. The early Baroque castle complex was built on the walls of an older castle. Capuchin friar and architect Ambrosius von Oelde and master builder Jobst Scheck from Störmede were involved in its design.
The multi-wing complex is arranged around a central courtyard of honour and is considered a particularly notable example of Baroque architecture in Westphalia-Lippe. Eringerfeld Castle has been listed as a protected historic monument since 1983. The castle chapel was consecrated as early as 1661 and is the oldest part of the complex. Another historical detail is the Eringerfeld Cross, which was erected in memory of the difficult birth of Anna Elisabeth Freiin von Ketteler on 22 March 1882.
Seven Circular Walking Trails for Different Day Plans
In the Eringerfeld district, there are seven developed and signposted circular walking trails of varying lengths within an area measuring 3 × 3 km. The trails are arranged in a rosette-like pattern around the town centre and start at the wayside cross in the centre of the village. For your planning, this means that you can choose between different routes without having to commit to one fixed circuit.
The circular walking trails pass a castle, run through old stands of trees on the edge of the forest, and continue through woodland and meadows to the wild and romantic valley of the Westerschledde nature reserve. Anyone wishing to combine different interests within a travel group can thus bring historical impressions and physical activity together in one day’s programme. The varying trail lengths leave room for a shorter or more extensive hike without requiring a specific walking time.
Forest and Water Landscapes in the Surrounding Area
The landscape is characterised by several woodland and water areas. In the Eringerfelder Wald, the western part of the “Eringerfelder Wald und Proevenholz” FFH area, woodruff-beech forests can be found. The Westerschledde and the Ruthenbach cross this area from south to north; in some sections, they are near-natural watercourses that periodically run dry. The FFH area lies between Eringerfeld and Prövenholz and includes two large, species-rich forest areas on chalk marl.
The “Eringerfelder Wald-Sued” nature reserve encompasses a large limestone-based deciduous forest complex in the Eringerfeld area. It contains woodruff-beech forests with different site-specific characteristics, as well as near-natural spring areas, stream sections and valleys. The Westerschledde, which carries water only temporarily, flows through this nature reserve from south to north. Northwest of Eringerfeld, the Eringerfelder Wald also forms a larger contiguous forest area in the Geseke Börde.
The Right Base for Planning Your Trip
A holiday apartment in Eringerfeld is a natural choice if you want to use the village itself as a base for days of culture and nature. If castle history is your focus, you can include the Baroque complex and the chapel in your plans. For hiking enthusiasts, the seven circular trails as well as the forest and stream valleys are the main attractions. If your travel group has different preferences, the combination of historical sights, varied circular trails and protected landscape areas offers several options for planning each day.
