Wilnsdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1185 as Willelmesdorf and looks back on more than 800 years of history. The town is located in South Westphalia and belongs to the Siegerland, one of Germany’s oldest closely interconnected economic regions, whose foundation was iron production.
Culture and History
Wilnsdorf is associated with a local Wieland tradition: According to legend, the blacksmith Wieland lived and worked near the town; Wilnsdorf was formerly called Wielandisdorf.
From the late 12th century until the middle of the 17th century, Wilnsdorf was home to a castle and the residence of the Knights of Kolbe.
For centuries, mining was the most important occupation of Wilnsdorf’s population. Ironworks operated near Eisern and Wilden. The historic mining area associated with Wilnsdorf included the Ratzenscheid mine; there were also mines in Eisern, Niederdielfen, Obersdorf, Wilden and Wilgersdorf.
