Experience water and discover industrial heritage
The Aquarius Water Museum is located in Styrum in a former water tower that is over 100 years old. As an anchor point on the Route of Industrial Heritage, it combines the history of the building with an interactive museum experience: more than 30 multimedia stations can be activated. These include a virtual ride along the Ruhr in the Ruhrmobil. If you are interested in the river landscape, you will find not only information here but also a digital perspective on the river.
From a height of 35 metres, Aquarius offers views of the Ruhr landscape. The museum thus combines two different ways of engaging with the subject: exploring water at the stations and viewing the landscape from above. Haus Ruhrnatur also focuses on water and nature. The interactive museum was established in 1992 in a listed former student boathouse. It offers excursions into the surrounding area to observe waterbirds, small animals and floodplain landscapes. These topics give your outing a different focus from the industrial history of the water tower.
MüGa and Broich Castle: park and history
MüGa is a 66-hectare park right by the Ruhr. Its features include art installations, green areas for picnics and cycle paths; many events are also held there regularly. The park is within reach of Broich Castle and the Ringlokschuppen. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you can make MüGa a focus of your stay; Broich Castle, meanwhile, offers a glimpse into history and its collections.
The upper castle of Broich Castle houses a history museum. Its exhibits include documents, paintings, models, weapons and archaeological finds from various periods. A historical experience trail offers another way to explore the building: since April 2024, it has made the late Carolingian core of Broich Castle accessible to visitors and is barrier-free. The museum and trail each have a different focus – the collections from various periods on the one hand, and the castle’s historic core on the other.
Theatre, boat trips and cycling
For open-air culture, there is the Mülheim an der Ruhr Open-Air Theatre. This open-air venue has more than 2,000 seats and offers live music in various genres, cabaret and theatre. Its programme therefore brings together several types of performance without being limited to a single musical style.
The Weiße Flotte is another water-related feature of the city: Mülheim’s Wasserbahnhof on Schleuseninsel is its main landing stage. If you would rather travel by bike, consider the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route, which runs for more than 14 kilometres through Mülheim’s municipal area. Each option suits different interests: a venue for live culture, the Wasserbahnhof as a landing stage, or a longer ride along the cycle route.
