Industrial history on the Dortmund-Ems Canal

Built in 1899, the old Henrichenburg ship lift was Germany’s first floating-body lift based on the principle of buoyancy and remains the largest structure on the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Its engineering principle makes it a special point of interest for anyone interested in engineering achievements and industrial history. The very name “floating-body lift” points to its technical innovation: the lift operates on the principle of buoyancy. Alongside historic buildings and landscapes, Waltrop therefore offers a clear point of interest for visitors fascinated by engineering structures.

Local history and cultural meeting places

The Tempel is a two-storey half-timbered house in Waltrop’s old town. Probably built in 1576, it is considered the town’s oldest half-timbered house. It offers a tangible point of interest if you are interested in Waltrop’s architectural history. The history of the town is documented at the Waltrop Local History Museum, which is also the home of the local history association.

The Kulturforum Kapelle combines historic spaces with modern event facilities: it comprises the former hospital chapel, a foyer with a staircase, and rooms used by the municipal music school. It is available for a range of events to residents and artists from Waltrop and the region, as well as to clubs and associations. The square around the Kiepenkerl fountain is in the heart of Waltrop’s pedestrian zone. Since 1982, it has increasingly become a meeting place for local residents; it is also where Brunnengeflüster takes place.

A memorial commemorates the maternity camp on the edge of the sewage farms. The camp was established in April 1943 for Polish women and so-called “Ostarbeiterinnen” (female forced labourers from the East) from Westphalia. This memorial adds a sombre historical dimension to the landscape.

Parks, landscape and outdoor activities

Moselbach Park is Waltrop’s largest park and lies directly next to the market square (Raiffeisenplatz) and the town centre. Its history is also linked to an event: the park was officially opened in 1976, and the annual celebration of its anniversary gave rise to Waltrop Park Festival.

The former Dortmund sewage farms cover around 1,000 hectares, about 450 hectares of which lie within Waltrop’s municipal boundaries. They provide a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. The scale of this landscape offers a different experience from Moselbach Park by the market square and town centre. Zechenwald is a recreational area close to town, with a calisthenics course.

For views across the landscape, the Spurwerkturm has an observation platform about ten metres above the spoil heap, offering panoramic views. Check access arrangements before your visit.
