Haltern am See

At Lake Haltern, swimming and sightseeing cruises go hand in hand with excursions on land and cultural sites in Haltern am See. The lake was artificially created in 1930 by damming the Stever and Mühlenbach rivers. Activities include the lido with its natural sandy beach, the electric boat cruise and the “Landpartie” horse-drawn wagon ride. The lido on Lake Haltern offers an 800-metre-long natural sandy beach, beach chairs, children’s playgrounds, and leisure and sports facilities such as beach volleyball and table tennis. Excursions on the water and on land

The electric boat calls at the Innenstadt (alter Seestern), Seehof, Stadtmühlenbucht (north shore of the reservoir) and Hoher Niemen (east shore of the reservoir/youth hostel) landing stages. A cruise lasts 1.5 hours; tickets are available online and directly on board. You can plan the cruise as a separate activity. Check the timetable and ticket options before your visit.

The “Landpartie” horse-drawn wagon ride starts at Haltern am See railway station, passes Lake Haltern reservoir and has the Westuper heathland as its first destination. This makes it different from the electric boat cruise: it starts at the railway station and its first destination is on land.

The Radstation (cycling centre) is also located right by Haltern am See railway station. You can rent bicycles and e-bikes there, and bicycles are also repaired. If you would like to include cycling in your stay, the rental service and repair shop at this location are useful points of reference.

Roman history and pilgrimage sites

Haltern is considered the best-researched military base from the time of Emperor Augustus. Annaberg is home to a pilgrimage site with a chapel and the St. Anna pilgrimage church. Roman military history and pilgrimage sites therefore offer distinct cultural interests alongside the leisure activities by the lake.

Recklinghausen: horse-riding and cycling routes in the district

The wider destination of Recklinghausen offers a different focus for outdoor activities: Recklinghausen district has an equestrian trail network of more than 300 kilometres, including over 100 kilometres of riding trails in the Haard forests.
