Herten represents the transition between garden art, nature trails, and industrial culture. Anyone who would also like to rent a holiday apartment in Herten can then continue their accommodation search.

Culture

The paths through Herten Palace Park and the palace forest are used for jogging, cycling, and walking. Herten Palace Park contains more than 200 tree species and preserves both a Baroque garden design and the character of an English landscape park.

The RVR Hoheward Visitor Centre at Ewald Colliery houses the interactive exhibition New Horizons โ€“ In the Footsteps of Time. The listed Ewald Colliery complex can be explored along the Ewald Promenade or as part of a guided tour. Ewald Colliery is characterised by mining architecture from three mining eras, including the Malakow Tower, Shaft 2, and the winding frame of Shaft 7.

Nature

Ewald Lake provides a habitat for numerous plants and animals, including tufted ducks and great crested grebes. Two circular trails begin at the southern end of Ewald Lake. An information-board-equipped wind turbine stands at the summit of the Hoppenbruch spoil heap; from there, the view extends across the Ruhr region. The Hoppenbruch spoil heap has serpentine paths for hiking and mountain biking, ranging from easy routes to challenging trails with jumps.

The palace forest covers 179 hectares and has a 9-kilometre network of walking and cycling paths. The 49.8-hectare Telgenbusch protected area has cycling, walking, and riding trails. The Hoheward Landscape Park combines a former colliery site with extensive green spaces, art installations, and regional views; there are numerous paths for hiking and cycling there. The Hoheward and Hoppenbruch spoil heaps together form a 220-hectare spoil-heap landscape, described as the largest in Europe.

Active Pursuits

The Horizon Observatory uses sighting markers and two monumental arches to observe the sun, the solstices, and the seasons. The Hoheward sundial is freely accessible on foot.

The Allee des Wandels route follows a former colliery railway line through Herten towards Westerholt. It is approximately 31 kilometres long and begins at the RVR Hoheward Visitor Centre. Cycle junction 43 of radrevier.ruhr leads directly to the Ewald Colliery site. The site is served by bus routes SB27 and 210 via the Bergwerk Ewald 1/2 and Gelsenkirchener Str. stops.

Visitor Information

The QR code rally at Ewald Colliery begins at the entrance to the Lohn- und Lichthalle, which houses the RVR Hoheward Visitor Centre. It is a free activity described as a digital treasure hunt, with 12 stations and a recommended duration of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

As of August 2026, the Horizon Observatory cannot be entered; completion of the planned renovation is targeted for the end of 2027.
