Heinsberg combines peaceful landscapes with a variety of hiking experiences. From here, access trails between 4 and 10 km long lead to the Rothaarsteig and can also be used as circular routes. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment can take their preferred pace into account when choosing a location: short nature experiences, longer circular routes, cultural and historical themes or an excursion using public transport each offer different focal points.

Heathland, stream valley and distinctive rock landscapes

The Heinsberg Heath is associated with the Haberg nature reserve. In the Schwarzbach Valley, diverse meadows along a richly structured stream invite visitors to explore and take a break. The limnological trail adds insights into life in and along the stream to the experience of the landscape. This means that a hike can be shaped not only by the distance covered, but also by its themes.

The Albaumer Cliffs are located in the wider regional surroundings of Heinsberg. The defining feature there is an approximately 750 m long rocky ridge made of keratophyre rock. It is complemented by rock vegetation, richly structured oak forests and notable lichen and moss vegetation. The route “Heinsberg: Through the Wild Cliffs” leads to the Albaumer Cliffs nature reserve and then follows a varied route with far-reaching views to Panoramapark.

Circular routes for different day plans

The Schwarzbach Valley Soul Place Hike (A4) starts and ends at the hiking portal or hiking car park Hochheide near Kirchhundem-Heinsberg. In the area around the hiking car park, the path is paved and almost level. This makes the Heinsberg Heath protected area accessible to people with limited mobility as well. The specific route remains limited to the area described.

Another option is the “Stauweiher Heinsberg” hiking car park. It is the starting point for the approximately 11 km circular route “Quality Trail Krenkeltal & Goldener Zapfen”. From Hochheide hiking car park, hikes on the Rothaarsteig can lead, for example, through the Schwarzbach Valley nature reserve to the Rhein-Weser Tower. There, an observation tower and catering facilities are part of the described destination area.

Experience cultural history along the way

On the Rothaarsteig, the themed hike “Heathland, Legends, Three-Country Corner” conveys cultural and natural history through informative anecdotes and stories. “Border Stories Up Close” also turns a hike around the Heinsberg Heath into a special experience with a smartphone. An additional stop is the aqueduct: the Rothaarsteig experience station includes a true-to-scale terrain model embossed in copper, where visitors can experience how an aqueduct works. It is located on the Rothaarsteig access trail between Kirchhundem-Heinsberg and the Haberg nature reserve.

Getting there and finding the right orientation

The Heinsberg Ludwig bus stop is 2 km from the Schwarzbach Valley Soul Place Hike (A4) and is served by bus route R93. This specific connection can be helpful when planning a trip if you would like to combine a hike with travel by public transport. For a holiday apartment in Heinsberg, this allows you to choose according to your day plan: on longer tours, the starting point and circular route take priority, while during a more flexible stay, the nature trail, experience station and cultural themes can vary.

For further regional orientation, you can also find Brachthausen, Oberhundem, Silberg and Varste. This allows you to compare different places before choosing your accommodation for the desired mix of nature, activity and discovery.
