Monastery, Park and Jüchen’s Architectural History

Nikolauskloster is located in Jüchen’s district of Damm. More than 100 years ago, the Order of the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin settled there. The monastery includes an extensive park, adding a landscaped dimension to the historic complex. The monastery and park thus offer two different perspectives on the same place: the history of the religious community and the design of the outdoor space.

Haus Katz lies in the heart of Jüchen’s town centre. This listed building was constructed around 1706 and now serves as the council chamber of the town of Jüchen and as an exhibition space. Its architectural history and its present-day civic and cultural uses come together here. The courtyard church complex of the Protestant church in Jüchen adds another distinct historical note: it dates from 1676. Together, these places offer tangible reference points for local history, though each tells a different story.

Garden Design in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss District

In the wider destination of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district, Schloss Dyck is the centrepiece of a park and garden complex covering around 70 hectares. The “East Meets West” show garden at Schloss Dyck covers 3,500 square metres and is inspired by Asian and Japanese design. Its features include two bodies of water and a Zen garden. Hüsch’s Garden at Schloss Dyck has a different cultural connection: it was designed by Hanns-Dieter Hüsch, a cabaret artist from the Lower Rhine region. Cycling Routes and Nature in the Region

The Rhein-Kreis Neuss district has around 1,200 kilometres of cycling infrastructure, with a numbered junction network and clear signposting. The Rhine Cycle Route, Erft Cycle Route, Fietsallee am Nordkanal, Lower Rhine Route and Hanseatic Cycle Route all pass through the district; all are signposted except the Hanseatic Cycle Route. Another option is the Two Rivers Tour, a circular cycling route linking the Rhine and the Erft.

The landscapes described along the nature cycling routes through Neuss also vary. The 48-kilometre southern route leads through river and stream floodplains and skirts the Ölgangsinsel, Uedesheimer Rheinbogen and Mühlenbusch nature reserves. The approximately 40-kilometre northern route is called “Neuss’s Middle Terrace Landscape” and passes through a landscape with relatively few bodies of water. Comparing the routes can help you decide whether you would prefer to explore floodplains or a landscape with fewer bodies of water on your outing.

Near Dormagen, Tannenbusch offers another way to experience nature in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district: since 1988, it has had a nature trail with eleven stops and information on nature and environmental issues presented in a child-friendly way. Tannenbusch is also home to an approximately three-kilometre fitness trail with various exercise and climbing equipment. The regional examples thus range from learning about nature to outdoor exercise, without being the same as Jüchen’s cultural sites.
