Culture and History

The Fossa Eugeniana is an unfinished canal between the Rhine and Meuse rivers. Visible remains have been preserved as archaeological monuments.

St. Mary Magdalene is a three-aisled Gothic hall church dating from around 1400. After being damaged in the war in 1945, it was rebuilt in a simplified form and without its vault.

The Gelderner Mühlenturm was part of the medieval town fortifications. Underground passageways and casemates at the Mühlenturm can be visited; art exhibitions are also held there.

The Steprath Mill in Geldern-Walbeck is described as Germany’s oldest fully operational windmill and dates back to the 15th century. During opening hours, it can be visited on a guided tour led by an expert.

Getting Around

The Fossa Route runs through Geldern, following the unfinished historic canal between the Rhine and Meuse rivers. Well-developed cycle paths connect Geldern’s seven districts through nature reserves and along rivers. Geldern’s sights can be explored by bicycle, on foot, on inline skates, or on horseback.

The café at Steprath Mill serves bread and cakes baked with flour milled at the mill. Freshly harvested white asparagus is served in Geldern-Walbeck in May and June.
