Obermarsberg combines an impressive hilltop location with an unusually rich history. The Eresburg plateau is bordered by the Diemel to the west and the Glinde to the east. At the same time, the plateau on which the former town of Obermarsberg lies drops steeply on three sides. Those who want to combine landscape and culture on a trip will therefore find many specific starting points here for planning their days.

Between Eresburg, the Diemel and the Glinde

The location on the hilltop plateau shapes Obermarsberg's character. From the Buttenturm, you can enjoy views across the Diemel Valley. This view provides a peaceful complement to the district's historical sites and makes the tower a prominent landmark for orientation while exploring. The landscape should not be understood merely as a backdrop: the courses of the rivers, the elevated location and the plateau's steep drop explain why Obermarsberg has its own distinct and clearly recognizable character.

For a stay with children or several generations, you can combine observing nature and learning about history without limiting the day to a single theme. A landscape view from the Buttenturm, historic buildings and a circular trail offer different focal points. Which holiday apartment in Obermarsberg suits your plans therefore depends above all on whether you choose the town as a destination for cultural discoveries, as a starting point for planning your own day, or as a combination of both.

Discover Historic Obermarsberg

Obermarsberg is one of the oldest permanently inhabited places in the Hochsauerland district. Eresburg, Charlemagne, a royal basilica-style St. Peter's Church and the Benedictine monastery of Obermarsberg, founded by him, are all associated with the town. The collegiate church has magnificent Baroque interior furnishings from the workshop of Heinrich and Christophel Papen. Obermarsberg thus brings together different historical eras and forms of sacred architecture.

Haus Böttcher is also one of the town's defining historic landmarks. Dating from 1589, it is the oldest surviving house in the town of Marsberg. The remains of the town wall recall the fortifications on the Eresberg that were destroyed in 1646. Of the seven towers of the former fortifications, two are still partially preserved. At the Buttenturm, a cellar five metres deep also points to its former use as a prison. Its historical significance remains tied to the respective period: these are traces and structures of an evolving past, not a uniform depiction of the present.

Circular Trails and Church Architecture

A historic circular trail showcases the special features of the Obermarsberg district. Created in 2008, the Sagenweg trail passes historic witnesses to the past and leads through historic Obermarsberg.

Another important building is the Catholic Church of St. Nicholas. It was first mentioned in 1247 and is considered one of the most significant examples of early Gothic architecture in Westphalia. As a Gothic hall church with two bays and an octagonal west tower, it offers a clearly defined architectural destination for anyone wishing to combine church architecture and local history. In addition, the Eresburg and monastery traditions associated with Obermarsberg represent the town's long historical arc.

Choose Obermarsberg as a Holiday Destination

Accommodation in Obermarsberg is particularly suitable for travel plans that give equal consideration to cultural discoveries and impressions of the landscape. Families can decide in advance whether to focus on the historic circular trail, the Sagenweg trail, churches and the remains of the fortifications, or on the view across the Diemel Valley. This creates a day plan with different themes, without requiring all experiences to be given equal importance.

If you would like to continue your search beyond Obermarsberg, you can also consider Leitmar, Beringhausen, Bredelar, Helminghausen and Padberg as additional destinations.
