Bad Münstereifel: Old Town, Eifel Trails and Romans

Old-town history and special collections

Historic landmarks shape the old town: these include the Romanesque collegiate church, the Gothic town hall and the Baroque Windeckhaus. The museums also offer a range of different perspectives. The Hürten Local History Museum is located in the Romanesque House in the old town. These attractions offer different ways to explore history and everyday culture, rather than focusing on just one subject.

Another historical highlight is the Roman lime kiln near Iversheim. Since 2021, it has been part of the Lower Germanic Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site. Six preserved kilns were excavated and extensively documented at the lime kiln. The Eifel Loop “Of Stars and Romans” leads from Bad Münstereifel via the Astropeiler Stockert to this Roman lime kiln. Hiking trails and a variety of tour themes

There are 13 Eifel Loops in Bad Münstereifel for hiking, with tours of varying difficulty. You can therefore choose a route to suit your preferred level of challenge, rather than treating all the loops as similar trails. Two Way of St. James routes also pass through Bad Münstereifel: the route from Cologne to Trier and the one from Bonn to Trier. This gives pilgrimages a different setting from a hike on an Eifel Loop.

The names of other trails also point to their distinct themes. The Kneipp Hiking Trail is one of the three Eifel Traces highlighted in Bad Münstereifel; the Münstereifelsteig and the Herb Trail are also named. The town’s visitor website also recommends a walk in the Bad Münstereifel Forest. The eifelbad offers, among other things, a swimming and sports pool, a fun pool, water attractions, a 122-metre giant waterslide and a sauna area. If you would like to include swimming or a sauna alongside old-town or nature activities, you can take this into account when deciding where to stay.

Another option for a break is the Wallgraben spa garden in the heart of the Kneipp spa town of Bad Münstereifel. It has seating and a Kneipp area. This distinguishes it from the facilities at the eifelbad: the garden, seating and Kneipp area are the focus here, while the pool offers swimming pools, water attractions and a sauna.
