Culture

The promenade circular route leads through Linnich's history with 32 stations. Linnich's documented history dates back to the year 888. It comprises four promenades, includes the Jewish cemetery among its historical points, and features a memorial stone for the former synagogue. As a historical route, it leads into 19th-century Linnich, when the town fortifications were still standing. Guided city tours in Linnich can be booked; the historical tour along the promenade circular route lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

The Jewish cemetery in Linnich is freely accessible; 29 gravestones have been preserved there. The Protestant Church on the visitor tour has choir stalls and a Baroque organ. St. Martinus is a late Gothic brick church and a hall church dating from the 15th century. Its foundation stone was laid in 1453, and the church continues to dominate Linnich town centre. The Hubertus Cross commemorates the Battle of St. Hubertus in 1444 on the road from Linnich to Lindern. Linnich's Cultural Summer is an annual cultural programme held between May and October.

Getting Around

The Rurtalbahn connects Düren with Linnich on its northern section and also serves Jülich. Bicycles can be taken on the Rurtalbahn all day, subject to vehicle capacity; each vehicle has five bicycle spaces. The tourism working group plans and conducts bicycle tours in and around Linnich and organises city tours together with the Linnich Historical Society.

The 180-kilometre RurUfer Cycle Route runs from Signal de Botrange in Belgium to Roermond in the Netherlands; selectable stages are provided for the route.

Nature

The Rur is described as a river that characterises Linnich and offers recreational opportunities in a natural setting. An approximately 11-kilometre circular hike follows the Rur to Barmen and passes a moated castle dating from the 14th century.

Hiking trails along the Rur to Rurdorf, approximately 4 kilometres there and back, and to Floßdorf, approximately 6 kilometres there and back, are also described. An approximately 10-kilometre circular hike leads through the Rur floodplains to Tetz. Canoe trips and paddleboat tours are described as activities on the Rur.
