Culture and History

The citadel was built in the 16th century by the Italian architect Alessandro Pasqualini. The largely preserved complex, covering an area of 90,000 square metres, can be explored on guided tours. Three significant periods of Jülich’s history are presented in the historic cellar of the Museum Zitadelle.

The Aachen Gate was completed in 1548 and is considered the first Renaissance city gate in the Rhineland. Directly beside it, an approximately 115-metre-long section of the city wall has been preserved. Despite the destruction of 1944, the symmetry of Jülich’s ideal city plan can still be discerned in the city’s streets. The Jülich City History Museum is located in the Kulturhaus at the Hexenturm and features a permanent exhibition as well as special exhibitions.

The bridgehead is also part of Jülich’s history. The South Bastion is the most extensively developed section of the bridgehead fortifications and contains 22 gun chambers. The bridgehead has been open to visitors since 25 April 1998. Qualified city guides offer tours in German, Dutch, French, English and Spanish. Leisure

Brückenkopf Park combines a zoo, woodland, orchards and playgrounds. The Kind & Kegel play area features a raft pond, water pumps, a play and climbing tower, and a giant slide. Brückenkopf Park also offers mini golf and archery.

Cycling

The RurUfer Cycle Route follows the Rur for more than 170 kilometres from the Belgian Plateau to the Dutch border. Jülich is included in the cultural programme of the RurUfer Cycle Route.
