Village Church: Architectural History, Wall Paintings and Bell

The village church in Zerrenthin dates from the 13th century and is the largest and oldest church in the parish. Its tower rises to a height of about 46 metres. Its construction includes a square wooden belfry and a pointed, copper-covered spire. The approximate height and the described architectural features give the church a distinctive architectural profile.

Inside, the continuous cycle of wall paintings is a remarkable testament to the church’s history. It probably dates from the first half of the 16th century, was uncovered in 1970 and restored between 1994 and 1996. An old bell also connects different places and periods: Martin Heintze cast it in Berlin in 1681; it formerly belonged to St Mary’s Church in Pasewalk. Since 1997, it has rung in the village church in Zerrenthin as a permanent loan. There is also a war memorial on the north side of the church.

These include the European golden plover, whimbrel, ruff, Eurasian curlew and northern lapwing. The area also has a history of salt production: because of its sometimes high salt content, salt was extracted from the fen of the Zerrenthin meadows until the 18th century.

The small church in Wetzenow is also nearby. It is a popular destination for special parish-wide services. So, alongside the village church in Zerrenthin, the surrounding landscape and religious sites beyond the immediate village are also worth exploring.

The farm shop at Hof Bischoff in Zerrenthin offers seasonal products from the slaughtering and processing of the farm’s animals, as well as produce from the garden.
