Geographical location
Ralswiek is located on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, within Vorpommern-Rügen. The village lies at the southernmost point of the Großer Jasmunder Bodden, a lagoon of the Baltic Sea. At the same time, Ralswiek is somewhat off the Bundesstraße 96 and the Stralsund–Sassnitz railway line.

History
Archaeological finds indicate settlement in the Ralswiek area since the Late Mesolithic period, approximately 8,000 years ago. The remains of a fortification probably dating from the Bronze Age have been preserved on the nearby Schlossberg.
Ralswiek was founded in the 8th century by the West Slavic Ranen as a seaport and was an important Baltic Sea port in the Middle Ages.
