Between Two Bodden Lagoons

Lietzow is located on the narrowest land link between the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden and the Großer Jasmunder Bodden. The two Bodden lagoons provide a backdrop for many discoveries around the town: you can consider Lietzow as a starting point for hikes, cycling tours and activities on the water. The landscape also varies depending on what you have in mind: alongside the beach, nature reserves and the flint fields are among the interesting destinations.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Tours

The 24-kilometre Bodden Panorama Trail, a certified quality hiking trail, runs through picturesque countryside along the Großer Jasmunder Bodden from Neuenkirchen via Lietzow to Mukran. Its length is a useful reference point when planning your hiking days. In Lietzow, a natural beach along the Bodden Panorama Trail invites you to take a swimming break.

A well-developed network of cycling and hiking trails also leads from Lietzow to the flint fields, Mukran and Binz, as well as through the Semperwald forest to Martinshafen and Glowe. The cycling routes listed by the municipality also include a cycling trip from Lietzow to Pulitz Island and a cycling tour to Binz. For a hike, the municipality suggests a route along the Kleiner and Großer Jasmunder Bodden to Ralswiek and back. This gives you a choice of tours that take in different destinations and landscapes.

Beach, Nature and Water

Lietzow has a sandy beach. The small, slightly stony beach is suitable for launching kayaks; Lietzow is recommended as a starting point for a kayaking tour on the Großer Jasmunder Bodden. If you prefer fishing, the Kleiner and Großer Jasmunder Bodden offer fishing grounds for pike, zander, perch and flounder. There is also a slipway at the Bücherbahnhof, where boats can be launched into the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden.

To the north and south, Lietzow is surrounded by extensive European protected areas within the Natura 2000 network. Nearby are the Wostevitzer Teiche: these undisturbed, natural shallow lakes are protected and provide a habitat for amphibians, reptiles and numerous specially protected bird species. The Schmale Heide nature reserve, with its flint fields, is also in the area. From Lietzow, you can reach them on foot via the Steilhangweg trail, which runs parallel to the railway, or by bicycle through the forest. Surrounded by woodland, the fields are distinguished by white stones and open to semi-open vegetation.

Culture in Lietzow

The town’s history also offers an unusual point of interest: the “Lietzow culture” refers to the final phase of the Mesolithic period, when nomadic hunter-gatherers lived in the area, and was named after Lietzow. A very different scene is presented by the Klein Lichtenstein castle in the town centre. It is a miniature replica of Lichtenstein Castle near Reutlingen in the Swabian Alb and was built around 1893 by the master builder of the railway line across the Lietzow Dam. Lietzow also hosts talks, archaeological and nature tours, and workshops for residents and tourists.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment on Rügen, Lietzow may suit your travel plans particularly well if you want to focus on Bodden scenery, hiking and cycling trails, the beach or culture. Which of these appeals to you most is a useful starting point when choosing where to stay.
