Glowe: Sandy Beach, Promenade and Discoveries
Accommodation in Glowe
In Glowe, you can combine a day on the fine-grained sandy beach with walks, culture and exercise. The beach stretches from the harbour along the promenade to beyond the Kurplatz. To the east of the harbour, the landscape changes: a pebble beach with an adjoining high bank begins there. If you choose your holiday destination based on its surroundings, you’ll find a variety of inspiration for days by the water and out exploring.
Sandy Beach, Beach Access Points and Promenade
The sandy beach is about 1,300 metres long and has 13 access points. The section in front of the harbour lies between access points 1 and 4. The natural current makes the shore particularly shallow there; this section of beach is suitable for families with children. There is also a beach volleyball court at access point 2. This lets you combine time by the water with a game of volleyball at a specific section of the beach.
The promenade, about one kilometre long, runs between the Kurplatz and Kap Königshörn. From its sun terraces or benches, you can look out over the Baltic Sea to Kap Arkona.
Pebble Beach, Hiking Trails and Castle Grounds
Beyond the harbour, the eastern shore changes from sand to a pebble beach along the high bank. This section is a starting point for long beach walks and explorations. If you’d rather experience pebbles and a high bank than fine sand on an outing, this change in scenery offers a different focus from the beach in front of the harbour.
Glowe has seven signposted hiking routes, ranging from 5.9 to 8.2 kilometres. The stated distances can help you choose a route to suit the planned length of your hike. Cyclists also find a popular stopping point on the cycling and hiking trail network: the castle grounds in the village of Spyker are designed in the Renaissance style and were first mentioned in 1318. They were once the seat of the Swedish field marshal Gustav von Wrangel.
Sculptures, Exercise and History
The Kurpark is located directly above Glowe’s pebble beach. Numerous stone sculptures by artist Mile Prerad give it a distinctive character. The park also has 12 outdoor fitness machines where adults of all ages can work out. Open-air art and exercise offer two different reasons to include the Kurpark in your day.
Another cultural destination is the Gothic St. Pauli Church in Glowe’s village of Bobbin. Built from fieldstone around 1400, it is the only surviving fieldstone church on the island of Rügen. Its construction and age set it apart from the natural attractions on the beach and hiking routes. Glowe therefore also offers a distinctive attraction for travellers interested in historic buildings.
The small Kap Königshörn lies right next to the Glowe waterway rest area, opposite Kap Arkona. A viewing tower about 7 metres high stands by the harbour building, offering panoramic views across the entire bay. The beach, promenade, hikes and cultural destinations each give your stay a different focus; choose your holiday apartment in Glowe according to which of these appeals to you most.
