Coast, Bodden Lagoons and Forest Landscapes

Northern Vorpommern offers a variety of reasons to plan a trip around its landscapes and opportunities for discovery. The coast includes the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula: cliffs and accreting shorelines, wind flats, and highly varied Bodden lagoon coasts shaped by peninsulas, spits and islands define this stretch of coast. Those interested in coastal landforms will find more than one type of landscape here. The peninsulas and islands are just as much part of the picture as the different coastlines.

Another natural highlight lies between Franzburg and Richtenberg, at the restored Richtenberg Lake. The area is a nature reserve where various waterbirds breed, stop over and spend the winter. Several viewpoints offer glimpses of the renaturation project, making it possible to see the lake from the perspective of how a landscape is being restored. The Northern Vorpommern Forest Landscape stretches between Marlow and Stralsund. Middle spotted woodpeckers and red-breasted flycatchers breed in its deciduous woodland; the lesser spotted eagle is a notable breeding species there.

Nature Reserves and Wildlife Watching

Northern Vorpommern’s best-known nature reserves include Ahrenshooper Holz, Ribnitzer Großes Moor, Kormorankolonie Niederhof, Unteres Recknitztal, Grenztalmoor, and Borgwallsee and Pütter See. Their names represent a wide range of nature-related interests, though each area offers a different experience. Discover Gardens and Parks

The annual Treckeltied is organised by the AG Gartenpfad Nordvorpommern of the LAG Nordvorpommern e. V. association. Since 2016, it has taken visitors through the autumn gardens and parks of the Northern Vorpommern Garden Trail. During Treckeltied, visitors can explore the grounds over an autumn weekend by bicycle, car or on foot. The ADFC also offers free guided cycling tours along selected gardens during this period. For the occasion, you can choose between different ways of getting around independently or join a guided bike tour.

The manor park lies in the immediate vicinity of the listed and lovingly restored Alt Guthendorf manor house, built in 1796. It features very old apple and pear trees, some of them varieties that are not known. The natural garden at the Alt Guthendorf estate provides information about insect-friendly flower meadows, herb beds and nesting opportunities. Meanwhile, the neo-Gothic castle in Schlemmin Castle Park stands amid a landscaped park covering more than 18 hectares. On a circular walk, visitors can admire trees over 500 years old: oaks, large beeches, black locusts and larches. The garden and park destinations each have their own focus, from old fruit trees and natural gardening to a large landscaped park with mature trees.

Salt History and Excursions

Bad Sülze adds a cultural and landscape dimension to the selection. Since 1971, the Mecklenburg Salt Museum has been housed in the former administrative building of the Grand Ducal Saltworks, the Old Salt Office. The half-timbered building dates from 1759. If you are interested in the town’s history, you can include this historic building as a specific point of interest in your travel plans. The listed spa park in Bad Sülze invites visitors to stroll beneath the trees and visit the nearby salt meadows.
