Besitz: Levee Landscape, Sude River and Village Church
Accommodation in Besitz
Besitz lies in the Elbe-Sude lowlands at the confluence of the Sude and Krainke rivers. Farther west, both rivers flow into the Elbe. Levees define the village: they protect the village and parts of its farmland from backwater flooding from the Elbe; several farmsteads lie directly beside the levee. Here, river landscapes and rural architecture sit side by side.
Levees, Polders and Paths by the Water
The levee and polder landscape of the Teldau stretches from the church in Blücher, through Besitz, to the Elbe. It is ideal for hiking and cycling. A levee path runs along the Sude between Besitz and Timkenberg; the Teldau and the Sude lowlands also offer opportunities for cycling tours. If you prefer to explore on foot, you can discover the polder landscape. This focus may be a deciding factor when looking for a holiday apartment: consider whether you would like to spend your holiday mainly on tours through the lowlands or combine them with the cultural and nature-related attractions in Blücher.
The Wild Pastures lie around the Blücher Polder and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. They are home to water buffalo and Konik horses. The pastures are in the former Blücher Polder, so the landscape’s character is shaped both by waterways and levees and by grazing animals.
Discover Blücher: Church and Exhibition
The associated municipality’s village of Blücher is home to a Neo-Gothic brick church. Its tower is about 45 metres high and can be climbed. The uppermost viewing platform is just over 22 metres high and can be reached by climbing 110 steps. The tower houses a permanent exhibition about the river landscape. Across three levels, it explores the Schaale and Sude lowlands up to the Elbe, the floodplain habitat, future approaches to managing the river landscape, grazing projects and the LIFE project. This offers a chance to learn about the area not only outdoors but also through its ecological themes.
The tower and exhibition generally have seasonal opening hours: from May to September, they are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 16:00; from October to April, they are open on Sundays from 11:00 to 16:00. Visits are also possible by arrangement. From May to September, the church café hosts a cultural programme on the first Sunday of each month from 14:00 to 17:00. You can take these set opening times into account when planning your day if the church and exhibition are of interest to you.
Farmhouses and Rural Accommodation
The houses also tell the story of the village. Numerous farmhouses belonging to former Hufe landholders have been preserved in Besitz. Of the original 26, three have been lost over the course of history; the character of the Low German farmhouses has largely been preserved. This gives the village a distinctive architectural character, different from the nature-related attractions of the Teldau.
In Blücher, the Old Rectory offers a total of 22 beds in simply furnished rooms with two to five beds each, with self-catering facilities. Amenities include several bathrooms and showers, a kitchen with dining room, a common room, two meeting rooms and a nature garden with a new clay bread oven. The Old Rectory is a partner of the Biosphere Reserve. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Besitz, you can take your preferred holiday activities—tours in the lowlands or nature and cultural attractions in Blücher—into account when choosing a location.
