Church and a Place to Dine in Werder

Werder can be discovered through two very different aspects: its village church and the home-style cooking at the “Zur Linde” restaurant. The village church is worth a detour and is built of fieldstone and brick. Services are held there at varying times. Castles, a Manor House and a Garden in Wodarg

Wodarg adds another layer of history to the picture. The remains of the medieval Burg Conerow castle complex lie there on a bend in the Tollense River; the castle was first mentioned in a document in 1248. The Wodarg manor house was built by Sigmund von Walsleben around 1733. A stable granary and a large barn remain from the manor complex. An English-style landscape garden was laid out at the manor house in the 19th century; it still exists, but is neglected. Wodarg’s history thus spans everything from medieval castle remains to the manor complex and its garden.

Kölln and the Municipality’s Landscape

The churches in Werder, Kölln and Wodarg are built of fieldstone and brick. In Kölln, a cobbled street contributes to the village’s idyllic, rural character. The churches share a building material, while the street gives Kölln its own distinctive touch. Wodarg’s location can also be described geographically: the village lies between the Großer Landgraben to the east and the Tollense to the west. These distinct village landscapes are part of the character of the municipality they belong to.

The Wodarg Forest is home to impressive megalithic tombs; check access arrangements before visiting. The ruins of Landskron Castle also lie west of Wodarg, about 2.4 kilometres away, and are worth seeing. This distance is given from Wodarg. The municipality thus brings archaeological sites, castle ruins and manor buildings together with its distinctive village landscapes.

The Wider Region: Mecklenburg Lake District

Within the wider travel destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District, Müritz National Park is a natural highlight in its own right. Forests, marshes, lakes and expansive meadows define the park. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail explores the park’s landscape types and distinctive features over nine stages. It runs along lakes, through unspoilt forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours through the park, including tours of the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest in Serrahn and excursions from the water. The natural setting of the wider destination thus complements the local and manor-house history around Werder.
