City Forest between West and East

The 133-hectare City Forest lies between Kühlungsborn West and Kühlungsborn East, the town’s two centres. Their former names were Arendsee and Brunshaupten. The different place names can help you find your way when interpreting older names or deciding which of the two centres to base your stay in. The forest forms a prominent green space between them within the town.

The paths also offer practical guidance: Kühlungsborn East station is a starting point for a walk along Strandstraße, which leads directly to the pier. The pier is 240 metres long and is one of the most striking structures on the Baltic coast. If you like to have a clear destination for a walk when planning your vacation, you can take this route into account.

Molli, Harbour and Baltic Sea

The Molli connects Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan on the uncommon 900-millimetre gauge. It runs 365 days a year; as services may change, check the timetable for your specific journey. The railway is therefore a distinct consideration when choosing the focus of your vacation: it connects Kühlungsborn with Bad Doberan, while Kühlungsborn East station is also the aforementioned starting point for Strandstraße.

Built in 2004, the boat harbour offers recreational boaters and fishermen direct access to the Baltic Sea and space for more than 400 boats. Another local landscape feature is the unspoilt Riedensee between Kühlungsborn and Kägsdorf. It is one of the last coastal lakes of its kind on the southern Baltic coast. This means you can use both the maritime townscape and a distinctive landscape feature between the two named places to help find your way around.

History and Townscape

At around 800 years old, St. John’s Church is Kühlungsborn’s oldest building. The town’s façades also display an ornamental tradition dating from the 19th century. Those interested in history can also visit the BT11-type border tower of the 6th Border Company on the beach promenade; it houses a museum.

The station building in Kühlungsborn East is made of red brick and houses GLEIS 2 – The Molli Restaurant. It serves modern cuisine in a nostalgic steam-railway setting. The Tourist Information Office at Haus des Gastes, Ostseeallee 19, provides year-round information about vacations. These different places may be useful when planning your trip: a historic building, a museum, a restaurant in the station building and an information centre open all year round.

Active Pursuits and Creativity

The European long-distance cycle route E9 passes through Kühlungsborn. The seaside resort also has numerous hiking trails and guided tours. If you enjoy active days, you can combine these options with a walk to the pier or some time in the City Forest. Kühlungsborn Climbing Forest has seven courses; an underwater nature trail is designed for Baltic Sea enthusiasts.

Laetitia Pottery offers traditional pottery classes for adults and children. In an amber workshop, participants hand-sand natural amber and can use it to make items such as necklaces, key rings or worry stones. Materials washed ashore by the sea—including driftwood, stones, sea glass, shells, amber and feathers—are also made into works of art there; washed-up rubbish can be reused as well. These activities add a practical, creative pastime to walks and nature experiences.
