Court architect Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel had Gelbensande Hunting Lodge built from 1885 to 1887 as a summer residence for the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg. It was commissioned by Friedrich Franz III and his wife, Anastasia Mikhailovna, a granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. The lodge was also the childhood home of Cecilie, the last German Crown Princess, and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark. The background goes back to 1 May 1945: an auxiliary hospital was set up in the then-unused princely residence by the hunting lodge. Before that, about 750 wounded people had been unloaded from two railway trains evacuated from Pomerania.
