The Bentwisch Church: A Brick Building with a Long History
The church is the oldest building in the town. Construction of the present-day Bentwisch Church began shortly after 1300; the Gothic building was completed between 1350 and 1370. Church History in the Municipality
The municipality also has a remarkable church history: Volkenshagen Church was first mentioned in a document in 1297 and is more than 700 years old. Under the direction of building councillor Möckel, it was remodelled from 1892 to 1895 on behalf of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz. During the renovation, a 47-metre-high Neo-Gothic brick tower with a tall cross replaced the wooden tower. Away from the main Rostock–Rövershagen and Rostock–Marlow routes, the tower is visible from afar, rising above the crowns of old lime trees. The church’s history also includes a commission from 1862: Friedrich Hermann Lütkemüller was tasked with building a new organ. Bentwisch Church and Volkenshagen Church thus offer different historical points of reference: the former is associated with the construction of the town’s Gothic church, while the latter is notable for its first documentary mention, later renovation and organ commission.
