Village Church and Local Architectural Styles

Erkerode’s village church has a Baroque organ dating from 1747, made by Johann Christoph Zuberbier of Dessau. The stained-glass windows in the apse depict the story of the Prodigal Son. These two details offer different points of interest: the organ links a specific date with the Baroque period and a named organ builder, while the windows tell a story in pictures. Visitors interested in church art can explore both a connection to organ building and a pictorial representation in the apse.

The farmsteads also add to the picture of local architectural styles. A scattering of three-sided farmsteads known as the “Erkerode type” can be found in Erkerode. Compared with Lucklum’s extensive manor complex, they offer a smaller-scale architectural point of interest. This brings two different architectural scales into focus locally: individual farmsteads and a manor complex with several types of buildings.

Lucklum: Manor Farm at the Elm Hills

The Lucklum manor complex includes a manor house, a church, agricultural buildings, stables and a landscaped park. Its different elements bring together aristocratic, religious and agricultural architecture with a park. Lucklum Manor is also considered a place of pilgrimage. Together with the village’s location on the western slope of the Elm hills and its role as a gateway to the Reitlingstal, Lucklum gives a stay its own focus, between manor history and hiking.

The Elm-Lappwald Nature Park is a major natural area in the wider Wolfenbüttel destination. It lies in the districts of Wolfenbüttel and Helmstedt and covers 470 square kilometres. It contains the only original, fully preserved High Baroque state apartments in the former Duchy of Brunswick. The Herzog August Library was founded in 1572 and is known as the “eighth wonder of the world.” Gotthold Ephraim Lessing lived in the Lessing House from 1777 to 1781. Half-timbered architecture, courtly rooms, library history and literature offer different ways to explore Wolfenbüttel’s history.
